Prince William gets helicopter wings... from his father

Prince William’s girlfriend was by his side today as he moved one step closer to becoming an RAF search and rescue pilot, having completed an advanced helicopter training course.

Kate Middleton, 28, got to her feet and applauded enthusiastically as the second in line to the throne graduated alongside fellow students at RAF Shawbury.

William was presented with a graduation certificate by his father during the 30-minute ceremony at the Shropshire base.

The Prince of Wales, 27, was at RAF Shawbury to present long-service and operational medals to RAF personnel. The Duchess of Cornwall also attended the event.

Prince William, known as Flight Lieutenant Wales, spent 12 months training at RAF Shawbury.

He appeared relaxed and happy during the ceremony, smiling broadly and whispering frequently to Ms Middleton, who was seated next to him.

Later in the month he will move to RAF Valley on Anglesey, North Wales, where he will be taught to fly Sea King helicopters.

William is following in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot, as did his uncle, the Duke of York, who was a Sea King helicopter pilot during the 1982 Falklands War.
