If G&S isn’t sophisticated enough for modern audiences, how come 15,000 people attended Opera North’s Ruddigore?

Sir, Here’s a how-de-do: Jeff Biggs (letter, June 23) suggests that G&S isn’t sophisticated enough for modern audiences. Would that include the 15,000 people who came to see Opera North’s Ruddigore earlier this season? Not bad for a piece whose age “has long since passed”.
