Sir, Your report (Jan 14) of the alarming truancy rates leading to poor exam results is being tackled in the US by relating practical service to study, involving pupils in action. For example, in Minneapolis, science pupils measure pollution in the Mississippi and warn farmers downstream when levels rise. When students can see the point of study they want more.
