A leading pro-Union group has received a £50,000 boost from three business donors, it emerged last night.
The Vote No Borders campaign group claims to be a non-party political organisation dedicated to fighting Alex Salmond’s independence plans.
A spokeswoman insisted last night that the money would help the group to focus on the “real issue” of independence — the erection of a major new border between Scotland and England.
Vote No Borders said it had been given £50,000 by Malcolm Offord, Kenny Greig and Alan McFarlane. Two gave £20,000 and the third £10,000.
Senior figures in the group have bristled in the past at being described as a group funded by millionaire Tory donors, and wanted to show their funding base was broader. “The donations come from three businessmen who are Scottish, state-educated and from working-class backgrounds. They went to university, have successful careers and they support the Union,” the group stated.

Mr Greig said he did not want Scotland “to cut itself off” from the rest of Britain. “I don’t want to be considered a foreigner when I visit London on business and to see my eldest children, nor my wife to become a foreigner here in Edinburgh. I’m for interdependence, not independence.”
Mr McFarlane said: “Vote No Borders highlights the folly of building a new Hadrian’s Wall.”
