Portsmouth see value in Kiely

PORTSMOUTH were in talks with Charlton Athletic last night about signing Dean Kiely, the goalkeeper, after pulling out of a move for Robert Green, of Norwich City, because of a lack of funds. Kiely, who is out of favour at Charlton, is likely to cost about £500,000, compared with the fee of about £2 million that Norwich would have asked for Green. The deal is expected to go through in the next couple of days. Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, is also considering Ognjen Koroman, the Serbia and Montenegro midfield player.

Steve Bruce, the Birmingham City manager, remains keen on Peter Lovenkrands, the Rangers striker who is out of contract in the summer and would be available for less than £500,000. Bruce also hopes to tie up a deal for Jason Euell after holding talks with the Charlton forward yesterday.

Tottenham Hotspur remain in talks with Nigel de Jong, the Ajax midfield player who is out of contract in the summer. The Dutch club want £1.4 million for him. Blackburn Rovers have decided against signing Gonzálo de los Santos, the former Valencia midfield player who has been on trial with them, and are concentrating on bringing in another forward.

FC Cologne want to end Jerzy Dudek’s stay at Liverpool and save the Poland goalkeeper’s World Cup dreams, according to the player’s agent. The hero of Liverpool’s Champions League final victory has yet to start a game since that day in May.

Southampton are considering signing Shimon Gershon, the Hapoel Tel Aviv defender, while Craig Davies, the Oxford United striker, is pondering a move to Verona.
