A policeman has been shot and wounded during an armed operation in east London.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Firearms Command (SCO19) and Trident Area Crime Command were taking part in the operation in Scriven Street, in the Haggerston area of Hackney, when the shooting happened at around 12.45pm, Scotland Yard said.

The officer was taken to an east London hospital where he was said to be in a stable condition. His next of kin have been informed.

The force said in a statement that a man was arrested at the scene but there were no other details available.

There were no reports of anyone else injured.

One man living on the street tweeted that there had been a shooting: “Loads of armed police and now medics.”

Another Twitter using wrote that “#haggerston is going off. Police all round my flat. Shots fired, dogs etc.”
