Sir, As a serving officer, I would like to disagree with Sir Ian Blair’s comments on institutional racism in the media and the inconsistent reporting of murders (report, Jan 27).

My experience is that race is not the issue when deciding which gets the headline. It is luck as to how many other murders there have been at the time and which has the best story to sell newspapers or get higher viewing figures. The media are a business.

Sir, As a member of the National Black Police Association I wish to state that it is equally insensitive of Sir Ian Blair to use the agenda of “race” to score political points.

Dishonest debate about “race” moves this country further away from the truth of racial murders and demeans those, black or white, who have been murdered just because of the colour of their skin.
