Police praise fans

SOUTH WALES POLICE HAVE said that they have been overwhelmed by the support of Birmingham City fans who have been helping to identify troublemakers behind crowd violence that took place during the club’s match away to Cardiff City last month. Eight arrests were made on the day after a group of spectators in the Birmingham section of Ninian Park ripped up seats and attacked stewards, injured three.

Police from South Wales and West Midlands plan to make more arrests based on CCTV evidence and witness statements.

“It has been amazing the number of calls and letters we’ve had from Birmingham fans who are disgusted by what went on,” PC Simon Insole, the football intelligence officer for South Wales Police, said. “The Cardiff fans also need to be congratulated for not getting involved, as it was the sort of incident that could have become nasty.”

The police denied that fans had been let into the ground without tickets.
