Sir, It is interesting to note in your report (“Website to show police actions over crime”, June 1) that “the new data, which show police actions following crimes from last month onwards and any court outcomes from January, vary widely from force to force across England and Wales”.
Not many years ago the Association of Chief Police Officers was fiercely opposed to the notion of having the relative performances of chief constables exposed to public scrutiny in league table form in the national press. Now that this mind-concentrating policy has been introduced, it is surely high time that the idea was expanded to compare the performances of chief superintendents in charge of the various divisions within these forces, in order to allow residents to see in their local newspapers how well their streets are being patrolled.
If the parents of children attending underperforming schools are allowed to ask head teachers for credible explanations, then by the same token taxpayers suffering from inadequate policing should be able to demand answers from the heads of underperforming police divisions.
