RICH ANTHEM: Michael Ross described the Irish national anthem as “an offensive anachronism in an Ireland that has taken its full place among the nations of the Earth” and suggests that it be “decommissioned” as it “belongs to the tradition of rabble-rousing republican mythologising” (Culture, last week). It appears that Ross has been in Rome too long; Irish people are not ashamed of their anthem and do not consider it offensive. His comments may help integration with his new friends, but he should think twice before he burns his bridges. — John Horan, Republican Sinn Fein, Dublin.
