Plymouth 1 Leeds 2: Lewis gives Leeds hope

Lewis was the provider for Robbie Blake’s opener in the third minute and then scored a 63rd minute winner before heading off the line to preserve the visitors’ lead and seal their third win in six games under Dennis Wise. While they remain inconsistent and were left hanging on, Leeds looked impressive going forward, and that will provide Wise with some much needed encouragement.

Ian Holloway’s Argyle may have been guilty of a sluggish start to the game but they responded swiftly to Blake’s sixth goal of the season through a Blake of their own. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, the former Manchester United reserve, controlled a right-wing cross from David Norris before pulling a 15-yard shot wide on six minutes. But Argyle kept their visitors interested at the other end with slack defending which after 12 minutes allowed the ball to bounce to striker Ian Moore, whose hooked half-volley from ten yards hit the crossbar.

Despite impressive moments going forward from Leeds, Argyle levelled when Tony Capaldi’s free-kick from the left-wing was headed in by Bojan Djordjic at the back post from six yards for his second goal in as many games five minutes before the interval. Djordjic almost claimed a second moments before half-time but his attempted lob from 25 yards landed on the roof of the net.

Leeds regained control of the game when American international Lewis applied a cool finish after he was sent bearing down on goal by a deft through-ball from Ian Moore. It was another moment of slick passing from Leeds that left the Argyle defence floundering, and beaten. Lewis then headed over his own bar to stop Lilian Nalis’s goalbound header to keep Leeds in front.

Leeds goalkeeper Graham Stack was needed to make a finger-tip save low to his right to push away Nick Chadwick’s 84th-minute shot as Argyle finished strongly.
