Alex Salmond has called for a “posthumous pardon” for Thomas Muir, the 18th century Scottish radical.
Muir was a campaigner for reform and democracy and was tried for sedition in 1793 in a show trial to frighten reformers. He was then transported to an Australian penal colony.
At a lecture in Edinburgh to mark Muir’s life and work, Mr Salmond said: “We have the ability to do this in Scotland and we should do it now to reclaim the position of these founders of democracy in Scotland.”
