Sir, Matthew Pryor’s description of a section of England “supporters” at the Twenty20 game against Sri Lanka (sport, June 16) was yet another confirmation of the rapidly deteriorating behaviour of an increasing number of people who “follow” cricket. In the last three years I have had my enjoyment of a day’s play ruined by the antics of these “supporters” at Trent Bridge, Old Trafford and Edgbaston.
Recently I sat behind a large group who drank countless pints of beer, chanted football songs, racially abused stewards (with no action from anyone) and generally had what I have no doubt they considered a great day, without taking any interest in the cricket. Shame about the effect on true cricket followers, but I’m sure they didn’t even notice.
The introduction of limited-over “thrash-fests” has not helped and to see “icons” like Kevin Pietersen taking the field with St George flags painted on his face can only encourage unacceptable behaviour.
