Sir, Some years ago, as a young chartered surveyor, I once managed to dowse the location of a water main (letter, February 8). As I was acting as a witness in a court case involving a wrongly placed pipe under a large area of thick concrete, I didn’t feel that the judge needed to know how I came to my conclusions. Nor did he ask.
Based, as I like to think, on my evidence, the case was settled out of court.
