Pill alert after boys taken ill

Police warn public to avoid taking mystery pink pills after warning they are extremely potent

Police have issued an alert after nine teenagers from the same Borders town were hospitalised within three days after taking an unidentified pink pill.

Five boys between the ages of 14 and 16 were found “severely sedated” on Wednesday at various locations around Hawick and were taken to the Borders General Hospital.

Yesterday another four boys from Hawick under the age of 16 were also hospitalised after taking a pink tablet.

Staff at Hawick High School called an ambulance after one boy was found shaking and vomiting near the school. The four boys remain in hospital in a stable condition.

It is not clear whether the pills are prescription medication or street drugs. An investigation has been launched to try to identify the pills, amid fears that more of the tablets are circulating in the town.

Police Scotland warned the public to avoid taking any of the tablets “at all costs” and said that they were “extremely potent”.
