Picture story of the week: The queue at the top of the world

This photograph of a long line of climbers waiting at 25,000ft as they attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest was taken by Ralf Dujmovits, an experienced mountaineer.

Dujmovits, 50, said there were more than 600 people and 39 separate expeditions when he took the pictures, which he hoped would deter inexperienced tourist climbers from making an assault on the mountain. He added: “Watching them, I had a strong feeling that not all of them would come back.”

The day after he took the photograph four climbers from Germany, South Korea, China and Canada died while descending Everest.
