Picture story of the week: A towering achievement

The man known as the French 'Spiderman' climbs the 2,717ft Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai — the highest building in the world

Alain Robert, known as the French “Spiderman” climbed the highest building in the world, the silvery, glass-covered Burj Khalifa in Dubai, on Monday. As darkness fell during the last stages of the six-hour climb, Robert was picked out by powerful spotlights. The ascent of the 2,717ft tower was made using rope and harness as a security precaution, unusual props for Robert.

“I know that sometimes there may be some specific requirements,” the 48-year-old told the Reuters news agency before the climb. “I do understand. You know, this is such an iconic building I can understand that even though they are taking care so much about my precious life, they are also taking care a lot of that precious Burj Khalifa.”
