Sir, Brigadier Foulkes (letter, Nov 22) has not made a mistake by carrying a miniature tool kit; he has made a mistake by accepting a caution. He should have said: “I will see you in court.” There is now a record of the incident which he should apply to be set aside.
The arresting officer and his superiors would, I suspect, have some difficulty in explaining their actions and the use of police time and resources.

Sir, Mr Foulkes should have declined the option of a caution (which I understand is not a conviction but is recorded on the Police National Computer) and opted for a summary trial, where any level-headed magistrate would have dismissed the case.

Sir, If the British Transport Police can be guilty of such grotesque incompetence, what chance is there of their apprehending a genuine terrorist? Incidentally, last week I went through the Tunnel twice by car without any form of security check.
