Pecking order: Oven cooked potato dishes

Chips are seen as the “bad” boys of the potato world but on fat and calorie content they often fare well against other potato dishes

Organic straight-cut oven chips
214 calories, 5.9g fat per 165g serving
Containing only potato and sunflower oil, these are low in saturated fats. They are also one of the lowest-calorie offerings and each serving contains almost a third of the 18g of fibre that we are recommended to eat each day.

Potato croquettes
261 calories, 12.3g fat per three croquettes
A mix of mashed potatoes with a breadcrumb coating, croquettes also contain gluten (in the breadcrumbs), added salt (about 0.7g per serving), as well as milk products to ensure that the mash is the right consistency.

Potato rosti
264 calories, 13g fat per 165g serving
One of the more “fat-packed” products, these are made from grated potato, which, inevitably, means that they soak up more oil when cooked. They also contain added salt and, if you really go to town portion-wise, the calories can rocket.

Chunky potato wedges
279 calories, 6.8g fat per 165g serving
Potato wedges tend to have a longer ingredients list than simple oven chips because they often come with a flavoured coating. You can expect seasonings, including salt and colourings, and often gluten in the small amounts of added flour.

Potato waffles
315 calories, 15g fat per three waffles
Another high-fat product because, like potato rosti, they have a large surface area that absorbs more oil during cooking. Ingredients-wise they are heavy on the carbs but low on fibre content. Stick to oven-cooked chips and keep these in the freezer as a treat.
