Pecking order: Flavoured water

A 330ml can of cola provides 139 calories and 35g of sugar (that’s 8.7 teaspoons) but are “healthier” flavoured waters any better?

V Water Shield
1.7g sugar and 7 calories per 100ml, (440ml bottle of lemon and lime flavour, £1.05)
One of the lowest sugar-containing drinks and free from sweeteners. If you drink a whole bottle allow for 7.5g sugar and 31 calories. This is not bad for a very long drink although you still need to watch your teeth.

Volvic Touch of Fruit
4g of sugar and 16.7 calories per 100ml (1.5l bottle, 93p)
This Original Blackcurrant version is made with spring water, sugar, lemon juice, flavours and preservatives. If you have a 330ml serving (the equivalent of an average-sized can of soft drink), you will notch up 13g of sugar and 55 calories.

Glacéau Vitamin Water
4.6g sugar and 19 calories per 100ml (500ml bottle, £1.42)
Although “a serving” may be deemed to be half of the bottle, most of us will drink the whole thing. Doing so will give you 23g of sugar and 95 calories. You may get some vitamins thrown in but you can get these from fresh fruit.

This Water
8g sugar and 34 calories per 100ml (1l bottle, £2)
Made with 80 per cent spring water and, according to the annoying label, the juice of “1½ lemons and 1½ limes”, plus beet sugar (table sugar to you and me). At least it’s free from flavourings and artificial preservatives.

Drench
9.2g sugar and 38 calories per 100ml (440ml bottle, 99p)
This contains spring water, a splash of blackcurrant, white grape and apple juice plus sugar, lemon juice, colours and preservatives. A 440ml bottle provides 40.5g of sugar. This is the equivalent to more than ten teaspoons. It also packs in 167 calories.
