Pearce aims to make City slicker

STUART PEARCE wants to add a further two players to his Manchester City squad before the transfer window closes next week. Talks are continuing with Heerenveen about Georgios Samaras, the Greece forward, while Joe Hart, the Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper, and Matthew Mills, the Southampton defender, remain on Pearce’s radar.

Portsmouth are facing competition from SV Hamburg and AS Roma in their efforts to sign Jacek Krzynowek on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Peter Storrie, the Barclays Premiership club’s chief executive, has flown to Germany to try to persuade the 29-year-old Poland midfield player to join Dean Kiely, the South Coast club’s latest signing.

Steve McClaren has paid tribute to Szilard Nemeth, who has moved to Strasbourg for a nominal fee. “We wish Szil the best of luck in his career,” the Middlesbrough manager said. “He was a valuable squad member throughout the past four years or so.”

Ade Akinbiyi travelled to Bramall Lane yesterday to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Sheffield United after Burnley decided to accept an offer believed to be in the region of £1.75 million for the forward. Akinbiyi turned down a £600,000 move to the Yorkshire club from Stoke City 12 months ago.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of Tomasz Frankowski, the Poland forward, for an initial £1.4 million from Elche, the Spanish club. Frankowski, who scored for his country in their 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat by England at Old Trafford in October, has scored eight goals for Elche this season and his sale has prompted the resignation of Ramón Sánchez, the club president.

Swansea City’s £300,000 offer for Rory Fallon has been accepted by Swindon Town. The New Zealand forward’s move will fuel speculation that Swansea are about to sell Lee Trundle. Ian Holloway is considering whether to follow up his interest in Peter Thompson. The Queens Park Rangers manager watched the 21-year-old Linfield forward play on Tuesday. Doncaster Rovers have signed Jason Price, the Hull City midfield player, for a nominal fee.
