Facebook should start paying trusted news organisations for featuring their articles, Rupert Murdoch has said.
The executive chairman of News Corp said Facebook was not adequately rewarding quality publishers for news content that enhanced its “value and integrity”.
Mr Murdoch also warned that steps taken by the digital giants to combat fake news were “inadequate commercially, socially and journalistically”.
He said that fees “would have a minor impact on Facebook’s profits but a major impact on the prospects for publishers and journalists”.
News Corp owns News UK, publisher of The Times.

Facebook, which has been heavily criticised for enabling the spread of fake news and Russian disinformation, has revealed plans to “shift the balance” towards reliable news on its platform by asking users to rate sources they believe are high quality. Outlets deemed trustworthy by members would be prioritised in their newsfeeds.
