Sir, As the treasurer of a small rural parish I take a very different view on the retention of bishops’ residences, such as Rose Castle in Cumbria (letters, June 21 and 22). Notification has been given in this area that there are to be further reductions in stipendiary clergy. The Church of England is, therefore, to be commended for taking the right decision to find more economical accommodation for the new Bishop of Carlisle. Money would be better spent in enhancing stipendiary clergy in rural areas, and funding the pensions of retired clergy.
