Sir, When I entered university in the 1950s, “pay-as-you-learn” (letter, Feb 6) was within living memory. At their very first lecture, Victorian Scottish professors would collect their fees, in a hat, from students who had turned up to take the course. As this was often their sole source of income it may account for the renowned quality of the teaching of that era.
