A man has died after being taken ill on board an Aer Lingus flight to Lisbon that was diverted to Cork airport last night.

The 24-year-old had been put in restraints after becoming agitated shortly after the flight departed from Dublin.

He subsequently became unwell, fell unconscious and later died.

It has been reported that the man bit another passenger before he was restrained.

Flight EI485, which was scheduled to depart from Dublin at 3 o’clock and arrive in Lisbon at 5.45pm, was diverted to Cork one hour into the journey due to the medical emergency. It landed just before 6pm.

It is understood that the deceased was not Irish but may have been studying or working in the country.

Around 170 passengers and crew disembarked and some were interviewed by gardai following the incident. The passengers were then transported back to Dublin by bus.

Gardai at Togher in Cork are investigating, and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.
