Sir, I find myself unconvinced that pardons should not be granted to soldiers executed in the First World War for cowardice (report, Sept 9).
It is perfectly justifiable to apply our standards when looking upon these events while still understanding why the decision was made at the time. Throughout history we apply the standards of the day to what has come before. It helps us to remember why we hold certain values dear if we apply our morals and standards to all issues.
We now know slavery to be wrong, and we do not shirk our duty to call it such, even though in “the context of the time” it didn’t seem so bad.
