Paper Heart

Nicholas Jasenovec's film is partly a documentary. Claiming she has never been in love, Charlyne Yi, a chirpy young American comedian, meets various couples to hear how they got together and what love means to them. This is pleasant enough, albeit in a twee sort of way: the anecdotes are illustrated with fluffy animations in the manner of Michel Gondry. Then Yi meets the gawky actor Michael Cera and falls for him, and we soon realise we're now watching a scripted mock-documentary. It's not the worst cutesy, lo-fi love story you'll ever see, but it's shown up by all those genuine true-life tales. Alongside them, its falseness is too glaring.
