Paintings go for £105m at auction

LONDON A painting by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Akte im Freien (Drei badende Frauen), fetched £3 million at auction – a record for the artist.

The sale at Christie’s realised £105.3 million in total – the second-highest for an art auction in Europe. A Picasso painting, Femme au Chapeau (1938), was the top lot, selling for £5.7 million, and was one of 29 lots that fetched more than £1 million. Tonight Triptych 1974-77 by Francis Bacon is expected to go for more than £25 million, which would be a new record for any Irish or British work.
