Joules, the clothing and wellies brand that features quirky British designs, has seen its international sales climb 65% in the past year.

Total sales rose by 22% to £117m, while earnings rose by 18% to £10.7m in the year to the end of May.

Joules will open its 100th store before Christmas, as it celebrates its 25th year. The taxpayer still owns an interest in the retailer through Lloyds Development Capital, an arm of state-backed Lloyds Banking Group, which invested £22m in 2013.

Owner Tom Joule said the business was planning to expand in Germany and America this year, supported by an £11m credit line from Barclays. In America, the company said there was a “fantastic appetite” for the brand, which trades heavily on its British countryside roots. Joules has set up a New York showroom to help build its presence on the other side of the Atlantic.

The retailer has also pushed into the multi-channel arena, with online and catalogue sales representing a third of retail revenue. The customer database grew 25% last year. The brand has also branched out into homeware and eyewear in a joint venture with Mondottica, the glasses brand that also makes spectacles for the likes of Ted Baker.
