Our man in Tel Aviv

Israeli architect Ilan Pivko recommends some foodie hotspots for romantic nights out, or a sharp coffee to get the day started

‘If you fall victim to HaSalon’s opening hours (see Where to Eat), try Eyal Shani’s other restaurant, Tzfon Abraxas (00 972 546 786560). There’s a performance every night in the kitchen, which displays ingredients – including 120 types of tomato – from Shani’s favourite farm (don’t get him onto tomatoes – he’ll talk for ever). For special occasions, I love Yoezer Wine Bar (Ish Habira St 2; 00 972 368 39115), a tiny restaurant serving great steaks and pasta. For less extravagance, try Charcuterie (3 Rehov Rabbi Chadian) – I go for the home-cured meats and freshly baked bread. During the day, I’m usually working, and I probably owe my success to Espresso Bar (8 Rothschild Blvd), which has the best coffee in town.’
