Conversations among film fanatics across the globe will be intensifying this weekend, with wild speculation and staunch defences of our personal favourite movies of the last 12 months, as the 94th Academy awards ceremony steadily approaches.
After a surprise best film win at the Producers Guild awards, Times chief film critic Kevin Maher has predicted that uplifting drama Coda will pip Jane Campion’s slow-burn western, The Power of the Dog to the best picture Oscar. However, will Campion triumph in the best director category? Or will she lose out to Steven Spielberg again as she did last time she was nominated for the award back in 1994 for The Piano? Sunday Times film critic Tom Shone certainly thinks she deserves to win, as she becomes the first female to be nominated for the award twice.
Sadly, these questions will remain unanswered until Sunday evening. However, until then, the questions below can be answered and in the process, you’ll find out just how much you know about the Academy awards and some of this year’s nominees.
