Oscar will become the third highest-paid player in the world on an astonishing annual salary of £20 million after tax following his move from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG. The Brazil midfielder has been offered weekly net wages of £400,000 by the Chinese Super League club, which would leave him behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Oscar is paid £90,000 a week by Chelsea so will more than quadruple his earnings if the £60 million transfer goes through as expected next month. The staggering sums on offer go a long way towards explaining his willingness to swap a Premier League title challenge for a new life in China. Shanghai’s contract offer to Oscar is high even by Chinese standards, £100,000 a week more than that of his Brazil compatriot Hulk, who is also at Shanghai SIPG. Oscar’s contract at Shanghai will be worth more than the £18 million-a-year deal signed by Gareth Bale at Real Madrid this season.

Oscar, 25, has won 48 caps for Brazil, but has become a peripheral figure at Chelsea under Antonio Conte and has not started a Premier League match since September.

Fenerbahce have also made a move for Oscar with a pitch based around Champions League football, but he has concluded that the salary available in Shanghai is too good to turn down, and Chelsea view the offer similarly.
