In one of Rio’s tough favelas, two teenagers dream of a better life. Both are promising ballet dancers. Both have everything to lose if they fail to impress the judges at the major competitions they can barely afford to attend. Irlan is a honey-skinned boy with a feline grace and a ferocious work ethic; Isabela is a natural talent who faces resistance within the ballet establishment to her dark skin and muscular build. This rewarding and affecting documentary follows the two dancers as they struggle to secure a slot in a ballet company. It’s a handsomely photographed picture, which, ultimately, is about far more than dance — themes include family, dreams and determination.
