Online pundits growing bolder

UNLIKE their American peers, British political bloggers have yet to take a significant scalp, but there are signs that Britain’s growing community of amateur online pundits is becoming a significant force.

A study by the Hansard Society last year criticised the main sites for serving only “internet connoisseurs”. Ross Ferguson, new-media manager at Hansard, said: “UK bloggers have yet to decide whether blogging is a means to promote transparency in politics or another tool for party campaigning.”

Tim Ireland, who runs the www.bloggerheads.com website, says the gap is closing, and the general election is likely to accelerate the move to more aggressive blogging.
