One big step for womankind

Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper joined an elite club when she climbed out of an airlock on the International Space Station.

Only six other women have been on any of the 159 United States spacewalks and one has gone on the 118 Russian spacewalks. There are so few women spacewalkers because spacesuits are not designed for small sizes, said Ms Stefanyshyn-Piper, who is 5ft 10in (1.8m). “If you fit in a suit then the easier it is to work.” (AP)
