On the spot: Sir Mark Thatcher in court

Jonathan Clayton (left), Times correspondent in South Africa, says that Sir Mark Thatcher looked back to his old self in court this morning, after a torrid six months

“Sir Mark was looking very relaxed and jaunty, wearing an open-necked shirt. He had the blazer on but the tie he normally wears for formal events like this was missing.

“He was back to his cocky old self. He’s happy he’s sold his house, and he’s looking for another one in Cape Town.

“The hearing was a little bit farcical. The Equatorial Guineans had mis-spelled some of the names and their questions were poorly thought out and not well phrased.

“This was a civil case answering a subpoena from the Equatorial Guinea Authorities, but the whole thing was a bit pointless.

“When giving evidence Thatcher wasn’t evasive, but he answered many of the questions simply, often giving a yes or no answer.

“There were only a few reporters in court but many photographers were waiting for him outside.

“He said he hoped this was the last chapter in the affair.”
