Olympics in Brief

Nemov fan power stops show

Gymnastics: The horizontal bars competition was stopped for ten minutes last night when the crowd jeered the judges for a score that ruined Alexei Nemov’s chances of a thirteenth Olympic medal. It resumed only when the 28-year-old Russian, awarded 9.725 for a routine that thrilled the audience, gestured to his fans to allow the action to continue.

Igor Cassina, of Italy, took the gold medal with 9.812, while Paul Hamm, of the United States, claimed the silver and Isao Yoneda, of Japan, the bronze.

Impressive Hester still in the hunt

Equestrianism: An inspired performance from Carl Hester, on Escapado, in the second qualifier for the individual dressage contest lifted him to ninth place and kept British hopes alive as the competition moves on to tomorrow’s final, the freestyle to music test.

Ulla Salzgeber and Rusty, of Germany, the European champions, have retained their lead but only half a point now separates them from Anky van Grunsven, the defending champion from the Netherlands, who is riding Salinero.

Brabants in final

Canoeing: Tim Brabants, a bronze medal-winner at the 2000 Olympics, won his heat for the K1 1,000 metres. He finished in 3min 24.412sec, half a second clear of Adam van Koeverden, of Canada. Brabants, the Nottingham doctor whose bronze medal was the first won by a British sprint paddler, goes directly into Friday’s final.

Appeal revoked

Swimming: There will be no bronze medal for James Goddard, who finished fourth for Britain just 0.2sec outside a medal over 200 metres backstroke, after the British Olympic Association decided not to pursue in the Court of Arbitration for Sport the circumstances of Aaron Peirsol’s disqualification and reinstatement.

Britain battered

Hockey: Great Britain conceded eight goals to Pakistan in their final pool match yesterday. Britain’s 8-2 defeat assures them of their worst finish at the Games for 36 years. Niall Stott and Danny Hall were Britain’s goalscorers. Britain go into classification matches against South Africa, Argentina or India tomorrow.
