Old Crow Medicine Show

Big Iron World

(Nettwerk)

Mountain music throwbacks Old Crow Medicine Show burst on to the alt-country scene a few years ago. Their twanging strings and nasal harmonies channelled the back porch spirit of 1920s jug bands, winning them high- profile fans in Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch.

Produced by Welch’s other half, guitarist David Rawlings, this new album pushes the Nashville quintet further into Americana. There are echoes of Bob Dylan in the poignant I Hear Them All, while the Depression-era ballad James River Blues does Guthrie’s ghost proud. But OCMS are no mere revivalists; theirs is a knowing nod to a living tradition — they’ve even got Welch playing drums.
