A host of words and abbreviations used by women in online forums to discuss pregnancy and childcare have been included in the Oxford English Dictionary for the first time.

Baby brain, meaning impaired concentration during pregnancy or after childbirth; pump and dump, to express but discard breast milk, such as after drinking alcohol, and push present, a gift given after childbirth are among 1,100 entries added to the dictionary.

Acronyms including BFP and BFN (big fat positive or negative after a pregnancy test), SAHM (stay at home mum) and TTC (trying to conceive) are all on the list.

Researchers scoured Mumsnet to decide whether language used by its members should be shared with a wider audience. Fi Mooring, a senior editor at the dictionary, said: “These words reflect personal experiences but many of them also resonate much more widely, even with people who are not parents.”

Other new entries include mansplain, for when a man explains something in a condescending manner, and snowflake, an insulting term for a person deemed to be overly sensitive.
