Oath of allegiance

Sir, His Honour Barrington Black (letter, Oct 17) accuses Baroness Mone of unnecessarily raising her right hand when taking the oath of allegiance. He is wrong to do so. Since 1621 it has been one of the duties of Garter King of Arms to introduce new peers to the House of Lords. It is the custom in that House that new peers of Scottish descent take the oath of allegiance with a raised right hand, as His Honour can observe if he watches one of the parliamentary TV channels.
