Nurses get smile training

SMILE, lose weight and keep quiet about your personal life, OK? It’s all just part of being a nurse.

Nursing Standard (Jan 30) says nurses have been ordered to go on training sessions to encourage them to smile more. They will also be banned from saying “I’ll be back in a minute”, since it frustrates patients if they fail to keep their promise. Talking about their personal lives outside break times will be another nono.

Nurses are also to receive health checks and lifestyle management plans as part of the Government’s antiobesity drive, reports Nursing Times (Jan 29). Some say obese smoking nurses will think they’re being picked on. Others say nurses will feel victimised. “I hate the idea,” says Rosie Purves, paediatric nurse in Southampton.
