Just what is it that stops the drivers of 4x4 cars from giving way — and reversing — on rural roads?

Sir, Every July and August the Burnham Market area, on the north Norfolk coast, is subject to a migration of 4x4s from London similar to that of the wildebeest of the Serengeti. Local residents’ experience is similar to that of Jan Zajac (“Going backwards”, letter, Aug 31), in that these holidaymakers — welcome as they are to ensure the viability of local shops and restaurants — seldom leave the tarmac; the drivers seem to lack the driving skills necessary to reverse to the nearest pull-in. Nor do they return the cheery wave of the locals who have graciously made way.

Apart from the issue of common courtesy, a regular topic of conversation in the pub is: how do these drivers park their large vehicles when they are visiting Peter Jones?
