Noises off

Would headphones solve the problem of ambient music at art exhibitions - or simply add to the racket?

Sir, When I visited the Celts exhibition at the British Museum, I found that the “piped” music enhanced the atmosphere and my enjoyment of it, at first (report and leading article, Oct 16). But as its duration was much shorter than the time taken to see the exhibits, it became irritatingly repetitive from about one third of the way round.

Your suggested solution of supplying music on audio guide devices would not work either, as non-users would be constantly exposed to random squeaky noises from other visitors’ earphones.
