No to goo

Sir, You reported (“The Prince’s Trust in moderation”, Jan 24) that the Prince of Wales had been criticised by scientists for warning that research into nanotechnology could lead to a “grey goo” overrunning the Earth.

This is not the case. The Prince wrote in an article for The Independent in July 2004: “I have never used that expression and I do not believe that self-replicating robots, smaller than viruses, will one day multiply uncontrollably and devour our planet.”

The Prince believes that while nanotechnology may produce benefits for society, rigorous research is needed to understand the risks that may be involved in its exploitation.
