Sir, Why are we discussing a Queen Mother memorial at all (letter, Jan 17)? The Queen Mother’s Gates, near Marble Arch in Hyde Park, were opened in her presence in 1994. They are a combination of traditional and modern design with which she expressed herself well pleased.

Anyone who wishes to contemplate her life by observing a structure can visit these semi-functional items just as much as going to see yet another pointless statue.
