Nine feared dead in Moscow blast

At least seven people were killed in an explosion at a Moscow market this morning, although the cause of the blast was not immediately clear.

A spokeswoman for the Emergency Situations Ministry said that preliminary information indicated that the blast in the Cherkizovsky market in the northeastern part of the city about 10:30 a.m. (0730BST) was caused by a homemade bomb.

Police, who put the death toll at nine, and Interior Ministry sources said the explosion was caused by a faulty gas cylinder. Such cylinders are widely used at Moscow’s markets for heating and cooking.
