Griselda
(Naïve)
Despite a preposterous plot — king abuses wife to demonstrate her loyalty — the Ensemble Matheus under Jean-Christophe Spinosi develop palpable tension in this swirling baroque opera.
The French contralto Lemieux grows persuasively through dramatic recitatives from disappointment to despair, resignation and finally victory. But the fireworks belong to the sopranos — Victoria Cangemi dazzles with her shaking epiglottis in Agitata da due Venti and Simone Kermes leaps sprite- like across the octaves in Dopo un’orrida Procella.
