Man faces more murder charges

Peter Douglas Rees, 38, from Portsmouth, who was charged earlier this year with killing Amarjit Chohan, 46, the millionaire boss of a West London freight firm, was yesterday also charged at the Old Bailey with killing Mr Chohan’s wife, mother-in-law and two young children.

The bodies of Mr Amarjit and his 25-year-old wife, Nancy, were both found floating in the sea. The bodies of their sons, Devinder, 19 months, and Ravinder, four months, and of Charanjit Kaur, 51, have not been found.

Musician held

A part-time musician denied murdering Jane Longhurst, 31, a teacher found dead at Pulborough, West Sussex, on April 19. Graham Coutts, 35, of Hove, was remanded in custody by Lewes Crown Court for a provisional trial date of January 5.

Fatal flat fall

A three-year-old girl is in a critical condition and her mother has died after they fell from a window in a fifth-floor flat in Maidstone, Kent. Police said that they had ruled out third-party involvement, but did not know the cause of the fall.

PC spared jail

Keith Empsall, 43, a police officer found guilty of assaulting a man in Wakefield, had a two-month prison term quashed despite losing an appeal against his conviction. He was ordered to do 200 hours’ community service and pay £2,500 costs.

A former London detective sergeant was charged with 15 counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing indecent images. Sid Fillery, 57, from Sevenoaks, Kent, is now a private investigator. He was bailed until August 5.

Driver crushed

A 53-year-old man died after he was hit from behind by a Renault Espace while taking something from the boot of his BMW. Police were appealing for witnesses to the incident in Fenwick Road, Giffnock, on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Scotch mist

A German film-maker sparked an emergency call-out at Loch Ness after a passer-by noticed smoke coming from a boat. Werner Herzog’s crew had set off special effects smoke to create mist for his film about the Loch Ness monster.
