Student found in lake

A missing university student has been found dead in the Serpentine in Hyde Park. Anthony Soh, 18, was last seen on the night of March 22. He was drinking with friends at Imperial College, West London, when he ran off. CCTV footage obtained by police showed Mr Soh near the Royal Albert Hall, but there were no further sightings. His family and friends had organised searches and an appeal via Facebook.

‘Barn’ house unlawful

A property developer who carried out a “deliberate, elaborate and sustained plan” to outwit planners has lost a legal battle over the £500,000 house that he built disguised as a barn on green belt land near Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. The Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling in favour of Alan Beesley, 38. Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is considering “appropriate enforcement action”.

Bowel cancer tests

A new test for bowel cancer may save 3,000 lives a year. The NHS is to offer all those between 55 and 64 in England screening for polyps, growths on the bowel that can turn into cancer. Harpal Kumar, of Cancer Research UK, said: “Adding this test to the bowel screening programme will spare tens of thousands of families the anxiety and suffering associated with a cancer diagnosis, while also saving the NHS money.”

Niece has aunt’s baby

A woman has given birth to her own “cousin” after agreeing to help her aunt have a child. Emma Vaughan, 29, donated her eggs to Sandra Barlow, 42, and acted as a surrogate for the birth after her aunt had tried for 15 years to have a family. Mrs Barlow, of Maidstone, Kent, had two miscarriages and she and her husband, Chris — baby Maia’s biological father — had spent £40,000 on IVF.
