News in brief

Royal trip for William

Prince William began his first official overseas trip on behalf of the Queen last night when he arrived in Auckland.

He is visiting New Zealand to open its new Supreme Court and will also carry out other engagements over three days. He will then visit Australia on an unofficial tour.

At 27, William is significantly older than when his father, the Prince of Wales, made his first foreign trip to Australia on behalf of the Queen at the age of 19.
